Natural Deodorant Recipe

August 22, 2019 6 Comments

Our dear friend and Everyday Oil user, Chandler, lives in Haiti with her husband Josh and their two beautiful little ones.  Chandler is so genuine and easy to engage with – to put it simply – she is the type of person that we need more of in our lives and in our world.

In 2014, they founded Haiti Design Co.  It is a sustainable business that works with local artisans, providing the community with design, training and job creation. They have built  something special and it can be felt through their handcrafted goods and measured by their growth and ongoing initiatives like their artisan incubator and wellness programs.

Chandler has been using Everyday Oil for years.  Recently, she has combined the multipurpose benefits of Everyday Oil into a natural deodorant recipe she discovered and made her own.  We have all been there before … the endless fight to find the ONE natural deodorant that works for longer than a month.  Over the past many months we have been getting messages from her saying “it still works!”.   She lives in Haiti in a perpetually very warm climate, so this has been fully vetted!  Below are a few words from Chandler, including her recipe:

Why I started making my own Natural Deodorant?

Over the years I have tried many natural deodorants and never had success. I have a good friend that was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and the doctors told her to stop using deodorant with aluminum. This made me take it more seriously. I have probably tried seven different brands - some make me smell worse, some only work for 1-2 months.

So that's when I tried making my own and it's been awesome. I never smell “bad” anymore - it really lasts all day!

Honestly, when I was trying the other natural brands I just ended up feeling bad about myself. It's embarrassing and annoying to have body odor and it made me feel gross. It feels wonderful  to not stink and know I'm not absorbing crazy chemicals through my armpits!

The downside - if it’s not your normal, it is a little weird at first adjusting to applying deodorant that's an oily/pasty consistency. And, it can leave white residue, especially if you don't mix in a little bit of extra oil before applying, but I think it’s well worth it!

I recently have a new addition to the system that's been very nice.  I keep a little travel-sized dry deodorant mix in a small screw top container. The mix is a bit more on the solid side and every morning I do two pumps of Everyday Oil in my palm and then mix a little of the deo dry mix with it and apply.

This new deodorant has been a

game changer

for me!

Hi! I have an allergy to corn – can anything be substituted for the corn starch?

I tried this deodorant in the past and in the first months I was very happy with it, but over time dark spots developed all over where I applied it, although it worked as a deodorant, these spots were a resounding NO for my armpits, and they are caused by baking soda that slowly burns the skin. My spots had to be treated dermatologically, and it cost me a lot of money. Well, several years have passed and I decided not to use deodorant of any kind anymore, the only thing I apply is virgin coconut oil, and I know that each case is special and unique, but I didn’t have a bad smell again, (I think I used deodorant because society says so, without knowing if I needed it or not) the only thing I had to get used to was a little perspiration, which after a while stopped bothering me. You may be interested in this experience and go deodorant free! :)

Hi Malena!
We haven’t tried it without baking soda but it would definitely be worth it to experiment, perhaps try a smaller batch at first. Let us know how it goes!

Hi KT!

Any essential oils with strong anti-microbial properties and that are safe for skin will work! Perhaps try lavender, eucalyptus or peppermint! Although for peppermint you may want to try just 1-3 drops as it can be tingly!

Love this! Was wondering if any essential oil can be used to substitute the tea tree? Thanks!

I love everyday oil and I love that a DIY natural deo was created using the product. Excited to try this at home but is there a substitute for baking soda? I’ve tried natural deo with baking soda and my skin had a bad reaction. Should I make this without? Thanks for posting!
