The Benefits of Body Scrubbing

July 25, 2024 2 Comments

I first found out about scrubby hands when I went to the Korean Spa Castle in Queens with some friends many years ago. In the downstairs area, it is mandatory to all be naked, and you can get ‘scrubbed’ by amazing older women with scrubby hands. You lay on a plastic covered surface while they scrub you head to toe and pour buckets of warm water over you, washing away a surprising and disturbing amount of dead skin.

Body scrubbing is an important part of Korean culture, and it's amazing. It's the perfect seasonal exfoliation. We suggest gentle exfoliation daily or weekly as needed and a more intense exfoliation seasonally to keep skin happy!

Angela Dimayuga introduced me to these, her favorite Korean scrubbies, which are tiny and so cute and come in amazing colors.

I still prefer the classic, which is what they use at Spa Castle. It has the perfect texture; gentler than a loofah, but rough enough to really scrub.

Round out your at-home gentle exfoliation routine with these simple tools:

DRY BRUSH BEFORE THE SHOWER

This brush was made to be non-abrasive on sensitive skin and without any plastic or hardware (that can rust over time). Made from beech wood, natural bristles and without any logo, it is an object we hope will earn a spot on your bathroom counter, reminding you to utilize it daily and to be gentle with yourself :)

Dry brushing is known to stimulate the lymphatic system, increase circulation, and exfoliate the skin, removing dead cells and promoting a healthy glow.

Use the brush on dry skin before showering. Start at your feet and brush upward toward your heart in long, sweeping motions. This practice can invigorate your skin and enhance blood flow.

WASHCLOTH IN THE SHOWER

The waffle knit washcloth is the result of a very long search for the perfect texture for a light exfoliation, while being gentle and soft enough for the delicate face. Use after cleansing with Everyday Oil to help remove any dirt, grime or makeup from your day.

100% cotton and OEKO-TEX certified and un-dyed. It’s smaller and has a loop for hanging so that it can dry quickly!

WHY EXFOLIATION MATTERS

These gentle and simple practices enhance circulation, helping to deliver nutrients and oxygen to your skin cells, which can improve skin health and appearance. They also support lymphatic drainage, which can reduce puffiness and improve detoxification.

new to dry brushing! is it always necessary or recommended to shower after dry brushing? or is this something that can be done on its own with an oil afterwards?

Everyday Oil replied:
Great question! Showering after dry brushing is beneficial for removing dead skin cells, but it’s not mandatory. If you find yourself dry brushing daily, try skipping the shower once in a while and using an Oil afterwards :) We recommend mixing Everyday Oil with a little water when applying to dry skin for maximum hydration 💛

For really dry skin, do you recommend exfoliating/ dry brushing daily?
———
Everyday Oil replied:
For really dry skin, 2-3x a week would be great. We recommend avoiding over-exfoliation. However, gentle exfoliation, like using a softer dry brush like ours, can be beneficial in removing dead skin cells and allowing Oil to absorb more effectively. Using water with your Everyday Oil will bring even more hydration, whether that’s after the shower or mixing with a bit of water before applying :) If you find your skin tolerates it well, you can adjust the frequency to what feels best for you.
