Unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart as a pump, the lymphatic system, our body's detox pathways, relies on movement, breath, and gentle stimulation to keep things flowing. The lymphatic system filters toxins, removes waste, and transports white blood cells that help fight infection. When it’s stagnant, immunity can be sluggish.
Healthy circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, clearing away what we no longer need. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, circulation is linked to the flow of chi, or 'life force'. When circulation is strong, vitality and immunity are too.
Simple tools for getting those support systems flowing
SELF MASSAGE
The concept of Gua Sha comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it was also called “coining” or “spooning” in reference to the different tools that were used for this purpose. Ancient Greeks and Romans did similar treatments using a bronze instrument called a “strigil”, and in Ayurveda there is Abhyanga, a self-massage with oil without a tool. We love that so many different styles of instruments have been used for the same purpose by different healers throughout time, and think this speaks to the efficacy of the practice.
TOWEL OFF
After a shower or a bath, rub your skin with a towel a little more vigorously than usual. The simple act can boost circulation and lymph movement. Dry brushing is a more traditional method stemming from Ayurvedic practices, but any gentle texture stimulation will help.
MOVE IT
Your lymphatic system thrives on movement.
Little bounces. Stand on the ground and bounce lightly on your heels for a few minutes.
Little twists. Stand feet width apart, gently rotate your torso side to side and let your arms swing.
Even walking, simple stretches, and deep breathing can support and help stimulate our lymphatic system and boost the immune system. It sounds so simple, but simple can be easy to forget.
