Gua Sha

Put a little oil on your skin, (Everyday Oil is great for this) then Gua Sha with firm but comfortable pressure. On acupressure points, pause and hold the Gua Sha, massaging it in a circular motion for 30 seconds to 3 min. The “Sha” or redness that can arise is normal and is a visual representation of the movement of stagnant energy. If Sha arises, wait for it to resolve before treating that area again. For a deeper treatment, use the serrated edge of the Gua Sha. This can be done before bed, during a movie, in the shower or bath - whenever you have a little time to rest and rejuvenate. Feel free to try this with some Everyday Oil and a spoon from your kitchen! This Gua Sha tool is not required to experience the benefits of this practice.

Our Gua Sha is made from Bian stone and can be used with Everyday Oil or in conjunction with any skin oil. Clean it with soap and water as necessary. Our Gua Sha is engraved rather than printed, so there will be no transfer of the print. Like a river rock, over time scratches and wear are normal on this beautiful black stone.

The concept of the Gua Sha comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it was also called “coining” or “spooning” in reference to the different tools that were used for this purpose. Ancient Greeks and Romans did similar treatments using a bronze instrument called a “strigil”, and in Ayurveda there is Abhyanga, a self-massage with oil without a tool. We love that so many different styles of instruments have been used for the same purpose by different healers throughout time, and think this speaks to the efficacy of the practice.
